Yogyakarta’s temples
West of Bali you can visit Yogyakarta’s temples. Two world heritage listed temples date to a similar era (8th to 10th Century) but they’re very distinct from one another and sit either side of the city of Yogyakarta. Both were abandoned and lost to the jungle for almost 800 years before being unearthed by European explorers.

Prambanan
Just outside the temples is Prambanan, Indonesia’s largest Hindu complexes features 240 temples scattered across vast plains, the highlight is without doubt the main cluster of 10th centuary temples. Borobudur
North of the temples lies Borobudur, one of the world’s great Buddhist monuments an architectural masterpiece, its imposing circular pyramidal-shaped stupa is designed as a spiritual path to guide visitors through the three levels of Buddhist cosmology. Fantastic views over jungle and hills amid evocative bell shaped stupas and statues can be viewed from the top.
